Carpet is usually chosen based on appearance, but suitability for any space and durability is essential too. Nylon is the most popular fiber. Polyester, polypropylene, acrylic, and Triexta are additional synthetic fibers. Wool is the top-of-the-line natural fiber. Whatever your preferred fiber and style, you can find it at First American Carpet & Floors. We have a carpet flooring showroom in Woodbridge and Stafford, Virginia.
Carpet pile
The pile is defined by the density of fibers as well as the length of fiber strands. Fibers are looped onto a backing, and these loops can be cut at the top to create more styles. The most durable type of carpeting has a low loop pile. Cut pile carpeting is softer underfoot. Saxony, the most popular cut pile style, has even and straight fibers that resist matting and crushing.
TPI
It's important to note the TPI or turns per inch when comparing cut pile styles. Fibers are turned or twisted to increase durability. Most carpet flooring has a TPI that ranges from 3.5 to 6.0, but more casual styles can have a TPI that ranges from 7.0 to 9.0. Carpet floors with a dense pile and high TPI are durable and less likely to unravel.
Installation
Carpet floors have a lifespan of 15 years or more. But for maximum durability, the carpet must have underlayment, or padding, placed beneath it. This underlayment absorbs the impact of footsteps, cushions both the flooring and subfloor, muffles sound, and provides insulation. A vapor barrier can be added to protect it from moisture.
